Frequently Asked Questions
What is art therapy?
Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses creative expression—like drawing, painting, or sculpting—as a way to explore thoughts, feelings, and experiences. It helps you access deeper parts of yourself, work through emotions, and gain insight within a safe and creative container, which is inherently therapeutic.
What is the difference between art therapy and an art class?
In an art class, the focus is on learning techniques, improving skills, and creating finished pieces. In art therapy, the focus is on the process of creating as a tool for self-exploration, healing, and personal growth. What matters is not the product, but rather what your art reveals about your thoughts, emotions, and inner world.
Do I need to be good at art?
No! Art therapy isn’t about creating “good” art or producing something beautiful. The focus is on the process of making, which helps you explore your thoughts, feelings, and inner experiences. Your art is a tool for self-discovery, not a measure of skill.
Who is art therapy for?
Art therapy is suitable for anyone wanting to: manage stress, improve health and wellbeing, gain insight, improve self-expression/self-esteem, find meaning. It is especially good for people who struggle to put feelings into words, such as children, trauma survivors, and neurodivergent folk, or those facing language barriers.
Can art therapy be done online?
Yes! Art therapy can be done online. The process is exactly the same. You will just need a camera and your own materials on hand.
